DCS: Normandy 1944 adds 93,000 square kilometers of Europe to fight over

DCS World, the free-to-play vehicle combat simulator from Eagle Dynamics, is getting a massive new update called DCS: Normandy 1944 Map and WWII Assets Pack. When combined with opther WWII-era fighter modules, it promises to be one of the most interesting additions to the combat flight sim genre in a decade.

The basic version of DCS World comes with a basic set of maps, as well as flyable modern-day Russian attack aircraft and the trainer version of the WWII-era P-51. Additional modules, available for as little at $9.99 and as much as $59.99, add new aircraft as well as the ability to take command of ground-based vehicles in a real-time strategy game.

DCS: Normandy 1944 will retail for $59.99, and include “the famous D-Day landing beaches and the ‘Atlantic Wall,’ rolling bocage fields of Normandy, large cities like Caen and Rouen, ports of Cherbourg and Le Havre, and 30 airfields,” on both sides of the English Channel. At more than 93,000 square kilometers, the map is larger than any previous DCS product. For replayability, it will also feature multiple seasons.

The assets pack will include everything from LCXVP “Higgins” landing boats to an AI-controlled B-17G bomber, as well as both light and heavy armor pieces, a German U-boat and functional locomotives. You can find a full listing of the included features and period assets on the Eagle Dynamics Facebook page.

It promises to be a field day for modders and mission designers.

To get the most out of the experience, players will likely want to invest in a decent set of flight controls including pedals. They might also want to drop some money on DCS: P-51D Mustang, DCS: BF-109 K-4 Kurfürst, DCS: Fw 190 D-9 Dora and the upcoming DCS: Spitfire LF Mk. IX (now in early access). The software alone could run the avid flight-sim enthusiast a few hundred dollars.

The module is available for pre-purchase right now for $47.99, a 20 percent discount. No final release date has been given. The module will be compatible with Windows PC, and work with Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive.
