First Inhumans teaser sets up a dysfunctional family dynamic facing betrayal

Marvel has released the first teaser for its upcoming Inhumans series, following the debut of a much-talked-about cast photo.

The teaser is pretty light on visuals — none of the actors actually make an appearance, and the entire thing seems to take place behind the title card. What it does have, however, are a couple of voice-overs that provide some inkling about what the show is about.

The first voice heard most likely belongs to Iwan Rheon (Game of Thrones). Rheon will play Maximus, a genius and Inhuman who was first introduced in Fantastic Four #47back in 1966. The son of a celebrated geneticist, Agon, and brother of Black Bolt, ruler of the Inhumans, Maximus desperately wants to wear the crown that his brother sports. When asked in the teaser if he was willing to betray his brother — and their king — by going against his wishes, Maximus responds that he’s doing it in the name of the people he wants to protect.

The strained relationship between the two siblings makes it appear that Inhumans may take on a very Thor/Loki-like approach. In the movies, Thor was considered a king among the people of Asgard, while Loki, his younger brother, desperately fought to wield that same power and recognition. Inhumans follows a race of beings with superhuman powers, each with a unique ability. The heroes were first introduced by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby in Marvel Comics in 1965.

Inhumans was originally slated to be a feature film, but Marvel decided to turn it into a TV series. ABC, which is also owned by Marvel Entertainment’s parent company, Disney, will air the first two episodes in IMAX theaters beginning September 1. The rest of the season will air on the network beginning Sept. 26.
