PSA: Which battle simulator is right for you?

It has come to our attention here at the Polygon battle simulation desk that there is some confusion over the two leading battle simulation products currently available right now. With the launch of Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator flagrantly interrupting the ongoing alpha testing of Totally Accurate Battle Simulator, how can you, Sam or Susie Consumer, know which battle simulator is right for you? Here’s our advice.

Totally Accurate Battle Simulator is a game you can play right now, but it’s not done yet. It’s not actually even for sale. The game has been in an open alpha state for some time, and developer Landfall appears to be sending codes out to anyone who asks.

Even us.

Totally Accurate Battle Simulator Alpha

Totally Accurate Battle Simulator is exactly what it sounds like: A gritty, unflinching, and surprisingly humanistic depiction of ancient warfare. It's set to release some time in 2017, but you can sign up for the alpha now.

Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator is also a game you can play right now. It is also not done yet, although it is actually for sale. It entered Steam’s Early Access program just about a week ago, and developer Brilliant Game Studios has currently discounted it 10 percent off its $15.99 price tag. While not free (see above), some would consider this a good deal.

Despite what the titles would lead you to believe, Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator is actually a bit more accurate than Totally Accurate Battle Simulator. It features things like textures, for both the characters and the landscapes they fight on, giving it an edge in the realism category. However, we will admit that the helmets in Totally Accurate Battle Simulator are top-notch.

There are, of course, some things about Ultimate Epic Battle Simulator that are not entirely, totally accurate. Among them, we would like to mention that the Uruk-Hai and particularly large trolls in Ultimate Epic are the least totally accurate, while Chuck Norris is rendered with a very high level of fidelity.

So is the giant turtle.

Meanwhile, Totally Accurate Battle Simulator does have the upper hand as far as physics goes.
