Valerian trailer promises to be even more lavish than The Fifth Element

STX Entertainment has released the final trailer for Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, the director’s movie that’s been in the making for years.

If Besson is known for the creativity and oddity he brought to The Fifth Element in 1997, Valerian looks to double that, using modern technology to achieve visual effects he couldn’t two decades ago. From the first moment of the new trailer until the last second, the computer generated world Besson has been working for years to create is breathtaking. It’s a combination of weird and beautiful, strange and unfamiliar but impossible to look away from.

The universe that Besson and his team have created is enough to sustain anyone’s interest — to the point that it feels even weirder when real actors step into the trailer. Valerian stars Dane DeHaan (Amazing Spider-Man 2) and Cara Delevingne (Suicide Squad)but the focus of the trailer is the world that Besson has built over the years.

“It's reached the point that the limit of technology is imagination," Besson told Polygon earlier this year, “which is good news for me because that's all I have."

The question, of course, is how well the film will hold up to what the trailer promises, but those who enjoyed The Fifth Element may be in for a treat.

Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets will be released on July 21.
